Simple Recipe + Few Dishes + Guaranteed Crowd Pleasing Meal = Winner!

I have a love affair with sandwiches.  For Real.  People used to tell me that I should open up my own sandwich shop.

But I’m more interested in eating sandwiches than making them for the masses.  If I did have a sandwich shop these Hot Italian Sandwiches would definitely be on the menu!

Hot Italian Subs – Pro Tips:

  • Pre-assemble these sandwiches and then they ready to go into the oven when you need them.
  • Don’t have giardiniera mix? An olive mixture tastes great too!
  • Leave sandwiches uncovered during baking for slightly crisp edges. Or, cover with foil to have soft-baked style sandwiches.
  • Assembling these sandwiches is a great way to put the kids to work!

I am always texting my little brother to come get food.  If I ate everything I made for my site I would have to spend 6 hours a day at the gym!

After my first bite of this sandwich I knew I needed them out of my house.  I could have eaten the entire batch!

This was my brother’s response after tasting the sandwiches…

    1. where can I found the Oscar mayers 4oz lunch meat. I was at two stores and they did have it

      1. I believe I bought it at Walmart. But this was years ago. Back then I either shopped at Walmart or Safeway 🙂

    1. Hi Ashley! Giardiniera Mix is an Italian sandwich topping. Carrots, peppers, garlic, cauliflower and celery jarred in oil and spices. It is really delicious! You can find it near the jarred pickles and sandwich toppings.

  1. My kids have recently started loving pepperoni so I totally need to look for the Oscar Mayer pepperoni! And these subs look amazing!

  2. I just made these tonight. YUMMMM!!! They were so easy to make and absolutely delicious. I couldn’t find any giardiniera in my local grocery store, so I just made them without. I’m sure they are even tastier with that included. I will definitely be making these again and will hopefully get to try it with the added giardiniera mix. Thanks for posting this! 🙂

    1. Glad you like it, Melody! These sandwiches have been haunting my dreams. So Good! Even better with the giardiniera if you are able to find it.

  3. Thank you so much for sharing this recipe!!! It was exactly what I was looking for! I made this on mini hoagie rolls and added a little bit of garlic powder to the butter. They were phenomenal!!

  4. We don’t do the traditional Thanksgiving dinner at our house… we mix it up every year to try something new!! Found your recipe on Pinterest today and decided that we will be having this for our feast along with a traditional cauliflower salad from my Italian grandmother. They sound amazing…. making a trial run for some friends over the coming weekend!! Can’t wait to try!! Thanks for posting!!

    1. Sounds like a great Thanksgiving, Julie! Then you can enjoy family time instead of slaving away in the kitchen all day! Maybe I’ll do that this year too 🙂

  5. What brand of giardiniera did you use? It seems like there are a million to choose from and having never tried it before, I’m not sure which to purchase. Thank you, Kim

    1. I use the Mike Ditka brand and it is THE BEST that I have tried so far. It is chopped into small pieces and packed in oil. If you can find it, that is the brand that I would recommend.

  6. Just finished one of these and trying not to eat another…Delicious! I had never heard of the giardiniera mix either and now I want to find more recipes with it…thank you for sharing! From a happy, full family 🙂

  7. I made these last week for dinner – so tasty and so simple. My husband loved them and there was plenty of leftovers for the next day. I also liked how you made them economical to make. Thanks so much for helping me feed my family good food Nicole!

  8. Are you making the butter with actual italian seasoning, or the Good Season, italian dressing mix?

  9. Made these tonight and the family loved them. I switched out provolone versus mozzarella and used banana pepper instead. So simple and delicious after a long day at work. Thank you for the recipe.

    1. So glad you and the family loved these sandwiches! They are perfect for an easy weeknight meal 🙂

  10. I want to make them for an event but I don’t have access to an oven. I was thinking of wrapping each Sammie up in tin foil and layering them in an electric roaster, do you see any drawbacks to this?

    1. I haven’t tried this method. I imagine it would do a good job keeping the sandwiches warm. My main concern would be that they may get dry if left too long.

  11. These look and sound amazing!! Although, I am not much of a ham person…I was wondering if you’ve tried it replacing the Ham with Turkey?? Or is there another deli type meat you would recommend to use instead?

  12. Hey Nicole, just ran into this recipe the other day and printed it out.

WOW. Those were delicious. Are they supposed to “serve 6”?

Partner and I only got 2 servings out of them, oddly……….. :))

    Appreciate the great tasty recipe!!!!!!

    1. Haha! I always feel weird choosing the servings amount. It totally depends how hungry you are!

  13. Wondering if you cover the pan with foil when you bake them or just leave it open.
    Making them tonight!
    Sound amazing!

    1. I think I replied to your question…I hope I did. Yes, you can cover with foil or leave uncovered if you prefer toasty bread.

    1. Either way. Uncovered the sandwiches get slightly crisp edges. Or cover with foil for soft warm sammies 🙂

  14. I found this recipe through Pinterest, and am so glad I did! The whole family loved it (and that’s saying a lot with 3 picky eaters)! I love easy and delicious recipes!

I created a spreadsheet a few years ago to help me with meal planning, and have been updating it with every new recipe we try and like. It now contains around 90 meals, each categorized by main ingredient (Beef, Chicken, pasta, etc) and meal type (Mexican, Italian, American, etc), with a link to the recipe – yours included! It has saved me so much time with meal planning and making out my grocery list!

After talking with some friends, I thought this spreadsheet might be something worth sharing, so I have made it available from my blog to download for free! Now that my readers have your recipe, I’m sure they will be enjoying it as much as we do!

  15. I have made these twice and they are just as yummy the first time! DELISH! Great for a quick weeknight meal when you are running to take your kids to their activities! HIGHLY recommend this dish!!!!

  16. Your resizing the servings slide is fantastic. First I have seen it. I frequently serve a group of retirees a luncheon and have to resize a recipe all the time for 30-40

    1. Either way to your preference. For softer sandwiches go ahead and cover them. To lightly crisp the edges leave the sandwiches uncovered.

  17. i’ve been looking at this recipe for weeks meaning to make it, it looks delicious! but i’ve never used italian seasoning before. so i was wondering: what’s in the seasoning?

  18. My kids have recently started loving pepperoni so I totally need to look for the Oscar Mayer pepperoni! And these subs look amazing!

  19. Have you ever assembled these ahead of time and froze them? I’m looking for a “freezer sandwhich” recipe & wondering if these would work? Thanks!

    1. It is a slightly spicy Italian veggie mix. It can be found at most grocery store, usually near the jarred pickles and pickled peppers.

    1. I would imagine several days then bake before needed. Just make sure any liquids are not sitting in the sandwiches during that time. Maybe add the giardinera just before heating.

  20. Thanks for the recipe, Nicole! One quick question… am I blind or is there no actual video?

    1. No you’re not blind. Weird, I’ll have to try to figure out where the video disappeared too. A video exists, its just no longer showing on the post :/

  21. I added pizza sauce and red onion to mine and left off the Giardiniera Mix. It was delicious and so easy to make!
