Hot Cocoa Bombs are a super fun wintertime treat. Basically they are hollow chocolate spheres filled with hot cocoa powder, marshmallows and other surprises.

When you pour hot milk over the cocoa bomb it is like watching a magic trick when all the hidden surprises appear in the cup. Kids really enjoy making, preparing and drinking hot cocoa bombs.

How To Make Hot Chocolate Bombs

Homemade Cocoa Mix Powder:

  1. Combine all of the ingredients in a medium bowl.
  2. Set aside until ready to assemble.

Hot Chocolate Bombs:

  1. Melt the chocolate bark according to the package directions. Add a few tablespoons of chocolate to each silicone mold and spread the chocolate around the mold making sure to get a thick, even layer. I like to use a pastry brush to spread the chocolate but a spoon would work too.
  2. Once there is a thick and even layer in all of the molds, transfer the chocolate to the fridge until it has hardened– about 10 minutes.
  3. Once the chocolate is set, carefully remove it from the molds and place it on a tray. I use gloves while handling the chocolate so there aren’t fingerprints on the outside of the cocoa bombs.
  4. Fill half of the chocolates with the homemade cocoa powder mix.
  5. Heat a small skillet over medium heat just until warm– then remove it from the heat.
  6. Place an unfilled chocolate on the pan and allow it to sit for 1-2 seconds or until the edge is just beginning to melt.
  7. Then, immediately place the wet chocolate edge onto one of the filled chocolates and press them gently to seal. Repeat steps 6 and 7 with the remaining chocolate bombs.
  8. Drizzle any additional chocolate over the bombs and top with festive sprinkles or crushed candy canes.
  9. Store the bombs in an airtight container in the fridge until ready to serve.
  10. To serve, add the hot chocolate bomb to a mug and top with hot milk. Stir until the chocolate has melted and enjoy.

How Do Hot Cocoa Bombs Work?

Hot Cocoa Bombs are filled with everything you need to make a cup of cocoa. Place the cocoa bomb into your mug, pour hot milk over the top and watch the show.

The chocolate outer shell melts revealing the cocoa powder and marshmallows inside. Give a stir and enjoy!

Can Hot Cocoa Bombs Go In Water?

Yes, you can use hot water for cocoa bombs or any type of alternative milk you prefer.

Milk will produce a much richer and creamy hot chocolate than water.

Notes

*Candy canes add a bit of peppermint flavor to the hot chocolate. Omit the crushed candy canes for standard chocolate cocoa bombs.

This recipe uses a homemade hot chocolate powder, but if you don’t want to make your own-- feel free to use a store bought hot cocoa mix!

Adding additional chopped chocolate to the cocoa powder mix is completely optional. Just make sure to chop it really finely so it melts smoothly.

Mini marshmallows are a classic addition to hot chocolate-- feel free to add as much or as little as you like. Dehydrated marshmallow bits work well too.

We are using chocolate bark because it melts smoothly and doesn’t need to be tempered.
